Matchmaking Rework

The Matchmaking update that released in March of 2025 was an overhaul of the online matchmaking systems.

  • Whether the player wanted to host a lobby, connect with friends, or find a public lobby online, we strived to improve the experience across the board.

  • It also allowed us to add features to the matchmaking that players have been requesting for a long time

The devlog goes into greater detail on the changes to the matchmaking here!

Feature Responsibilities

As the feature owner of this Matchmaking update, I was the vision holder throughout its development. To provide more details:

  • In the initial stages, performed a thorough analysis of the existing menus to identify the strong points and weak points

  • Worked with the Community team to establish the most common pain points players expressed about the matchmaker

  • Created a proposal document for leadership that outlined all the changes to the matchmaker

  • Worked with the UI/UX designer to develop all the menu flows, layouts, and systems

  • Organized and conducted playtests internally and externally

  • Worked with the backend programming team to ensure that finding lobbies was optimized and seamless

Release Sentiment

This Matchmaking update was really rewarding to bring to the players. Players have long-asked to have better search options and filters when looking for games so it was nice to finally get it in their hands. It was a Herculean effort that required vast amounts of time and energy from every single department involved. Despite how difficult of a journey it was, the team always supported each other, was in good spirits, and remained steadfast through all the bumps in the road. It was one of the most complex features I have ever worked on and I’m very proud of how it turned out.
